Cancer treatment

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in our country. According to statistics from a study of 32 types of cancer in 195 countries between 2005 and 2015, the incidence of cancer has increased by 33%. Radiotherapy is one of the most common methods for treating cancer and can be used alone or in combination with other treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy. Shafa Cancer Institute has always been by the side of its patients, providing timely services, with the hope that early detection of cancer and following treatment pathways will lead to faster recovery and health for all patients. Radiotherapy uses ionizing radiation to destroy or shrink cancerous tissues. In this method, damage to the DNA of the targeted treatment area (tissue) causes the cells to break down and prevents them from growing and dividing. While radiation can damage healthy cells as well as cancer cells, most healthy cells have the ability to recover. The goal of radiotherapy is to eliminate the maximum number of cancer cells with minimal damage to healthy tissues. Radiotherapy can be used to treat a variety of solid tumors such as brain, breast, cervical, larynx, lung, pancreas, prostate, skin, spinal cord, stomach, uterus, soft tissue sarcomas, and bone tumors, as well as leukemia, lymphoma (lymphatic system tumors), and some benign tumors. This method, which has been used for years in advanced countries, is progressing and improving in Iran with the introduction of new and advanced devices such as Tomotherapy machines and linear accelerators.
